The psychological, sociopolitical and spiritual journey defined by women from around the world over the last 300 years has been aimed at transcending the position of "otherness" assigned to them by patriarchal cultures. The themes of this global movement have first been sensed, depicted and represented by creative women artists and writers. Many of these depth insights are only now being fully articulated into psychological, social, and spiritual theories. The research on which this course is based delves into art, graphics, sculpture, poetry, drama, short stories and novels produced by women during this time of cultural transcendence. The four great waves of feminist thought of the twentieth century, the eighteen distinct emotional phases of the moon celebrated by women and the seven levels of complexity involved in women’s personality development now being articulated by women psychologists provide the metaphoric trajectories for this study into the depths of women’s psychological lives today. Over 300 slides of women’s artistic productions and numerous vignettes taken from women’s literature along with findings from women’s personality development research will be presented to illustrate the diverse emerging psychological, sociopolitical and spiritual themes of the Transcendent Woman of today.
