QUESTIONS

Write short essay answers to any four of the following six questions.

1. Titanic, the great ship having fallen from the world above, haunts us still, why? Rose was not very impressed with the ship. She said it was called “the ship of dreams,” to everyone but her. To her it was a “slave ship,” taking her back to America in “chains.” Does this indicate something small or large at work within the human psyche? Should Titanic be viewed as a ship of size and steel, or as a microcosm of society? Be brief please.

2. The scene of Rose leaning over the stern of the great ship, contemplating suicide, below her feet emblazoned the immense letters comprising TITANIC, presents an eerie and dramatic image. Might there be herein contained some profound metaphor concerning one's constant choosing between life and death, success and failure, creativity and destruction, love and hate, or other titanic polarities? Have fun, be simple, brief, and if so inspired, brilliant.

3. What DSM IV (Axis I or II) disorder would you diagnose Cal (Rose's fiancée) with possessing? Briefly comment on your diagnosis using criteria from the DSM.

4. Describe a treatment plan for one of the characters in the film assuming he or she came to you for psychotherapy.

5. What did you learn from the film that you believe will enhance your clinical skills?

6. How might clients benefit from viewing the film and discussing it in therapy?
