| QUESTIONS Write short essay answers to any four of the following six questions. 1. Star Trek II takes place in the 23rd century. Do you feel that the practice of psychology will be fundamentally effected in centuries to come? Are moral, ethical, emotional, and psychological constructs transformed through time in similar fashion as physical technology? 2. From the beginning of the Star Trek series, the three characters most prominent and perhaps most metaphorically significant have been Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy. Applying a psychological interpretation, can these three “characters” actually suggest a dynamic psychic interaction between not three literal people, but between three fundamental human propensities within one individual? Explain. 3. On the occasion of the captain's birthday, Doctor McCoy tells Kirk that he is running from himself. McCoy prescribes for his patient, “Get back your command before you really do get old.” Kirk earlier enlightened a female Vulcan trainee concerning the “Kobayashi Maru” scenario, “A no win situation is a possibility every commander may face...How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life.” Might the above insights be equally sound prescriptions for clients facing their own issues surrounding the fear of age? To get back their command. Briefly respond. 4. Describe a treatment plan for one of the characters in the film assuming he or she came to you for psychotherapy. 5. What did you learn from the film that you believe will enhance your clinical skills? 6. How might clients benefit from viewing the film and discussing it in therapy? |
