QUESTIONS

Write short essay answers to any four of the following six questions.

1. Jim, Judy, and John all find themselves in jail on Easter night. Their family histories, dynamics, and interactions, have much in common as far as emotional/psychological abuse and abandonment. Lack of adequate parenting can be observed from the absence of direction, support, love, discipline, ethics, purpose, and feelings of belonging. Can it be said that their misdirected rebellion is truly without cause? How can the acting out behaviors of these three be clinically understood? Please be brief.

2. In conversation with the police Jim says his family moved from their last town because of trouble. “I messed a kid up” because he “called me chicken.” Jim continues, “They think they can protect me by moving around all the time.” In a sarcastic tone he says, “[They think] if we just move, everything will be roses and sunshine!” Please give a brief clinical reaction, or impression regarding this bit of dialogue.

3. What would you identify as being at least three of the inadequate, destructive and injurious coping devices which Mr. and Mrs. Stark employ which help foster, create, or contribute to the misery, despair, confusion, and destructive acting out of their son?

4. Describe a treatment plan for one of the characters in the film assuming he or she came to you for psychotherapy.

5. What did you learn from the film that you believe will enhance your clinical skills?

6. How might clients benefit from viewing the film and discussing it in therapy?
