QUESTIONS

Write short essay answers to any four of the following six questions.

1. When McMurphy misappropriated the fishing boat, his girlfriend said, “They'll throw you back in the can.” He responded, “They'll just take us back to the hospital, we're crazy.” Do you think that many clients use their “disease” diagnosis as a form of manipulation of the legal system, of society, their families, as well as their therapists? Please explain briefly.

2. During the doctors assessment meeting, Nurse Ratchet clearly did not want to send McMurphy back to jail while the other doctors did. She said, “If we send him away, its just one more way of passing on our problem to someone else. You know we don't like to do that. I'd like to keep him on the ward.”
Have you any thoughts or reactions as to why Nurse Ratchet couldn't or wouldn't unratchet McMurphy? Might there be lurking some significant subtext to Ratchet's rhetoric?

3. When McMurphy discovered that most of the patients in the hospital were voluntarily admitted and chose to live in the institution rather then attempt life outside on their own he is shocked and disgusted. More then anything else, it is the compliance, submission, and desire to please ostensible authority which maddens McMurphy the most regarding his fellow travelers. Have you any personal or clinical reactions regarding the large populations of people who so readily seek out submission, compliance, and the pathology of pleasing?

4. Describe a treatment plan for one of the characters in the film assuming he or she came to you for psychotherapy.

5. What did you learn from the film that you believe will enhance your clinical skills?

6. How might clients benefit from viewing the film and discussing it in therapy?
